A video of a man’s “cutest” surprise gesture toward his girlfriend has gone viral on TikTok.
The clip was posted by @paigelancelot and has garnered 8.1 million views since it was shared on September 10. A message overlaid on the clip says, “When you thought your boyfriend just wanted to make a TikTok trend but he had other plans.”
The video was captured in Iceland, according to a location shared with the post. A caption says: “Brando showed me how icey Iceland really got.”
The footage shows a man carrying a woman on his shoulder and putting her down on the ground in front of a scenic backdrop, with her back turned from him and looking away from the backdrop. He later taps her on the shoulder and she turns around to face him. He then points his hand toward the backdrop, which the woman looks at while raising her arms above her head in delight.
The couple repeats this routine in different scenes in Iceland, from a lush green mountain landscape to a sandy beach. In the final frame of the video, the couple are shown standing in a field against a waterfall backdrop.
The woman is looking away from her boyfriend, as usual, but the man is shown crouched down on one knee. Holding a ring in his hand, he appears to mouth, “Will you marry me?,” to which the woman nods “yes” while holding her hand up to her face in sheer joy and laughing.
A survey of nearly 10,000 couples in the U.S. who were married in 2023 was conducted by the Knot, a wedding planning website. Thirty-eight percent said they utilize opportune moments, such as a planned trip, to propose. One in five (20 percent) have popped the big question when they’re around friends and family. About the same (19 percent) did it on a day with a special meaning for the couple.
More than half (58 percent) said they feel some or a lot of pressure to plan a highly unique proposal. Seven in 10 proposers reported they planned the moment up to six months in advance, according to the survey.
The surprise proposal in the clip has delighted users on TikTok, such as ashlee, who said, “This is the cutest proposal video I have ever seen.”
PNWJess555 added, “Omg I love this!!!! The proposal at the waterfall.”
Alexa Forbes said, “The level of effort is unmatched!”
Several were moved to tears over the romantic moment, such as Megsmary, who asked, “Why am I crying at this.”
RainMonster wrote: “The way you didn’t tap her on the last one would have made me cry.”
Grace said, “Crying at strangers proposal videos weren’t in my agenda today.”
Newsweek has contacted the original poster for comment via TikTok. The video has not been independently verified.
